In an era marked by escalating climate challenges, the leadership of climate scientists has never been more crucial. The intersection of scientific expertise and political influence offers a pathway to sustainable and informed decision-making. Two exemplary figures in this realm are Mexico’s new President-Elect, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum and Dr. Frederic Bertley, whose contributions highlight the pivotal role of scientists in leadership positions.

Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum: A Visionary Leader for Mexico

Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president and a climate scientist, embodies the fusion of science and policy. Her background includes significant contributions to the 2007 IPCC report, which won a Nobel Prize, as well as the 2014 report. Prior she was known as the sustainability-promoting Mayor of Mexico City, where she incorporated bike lines and solar energy projects into city infrastructure. Sheinbaum’s presidency marks a transformative period for Mexico. She is its first female and first Jewish president. However, it is her scientific acumen that equips her to address climate change with a depth of understanding and a commitment to evidence-based policies.
